Burano
As a part of the RS tour we did an excursion to Burano - a small island in the Venetian lagoon. This utterly delightful island is known for its rainbow of different coloured houses. The different colours delineate the boundaries of each property. However, an ancient legend is that fishermen painted their houses brightly in order to see them when they were far away out in the lagoon fishing.
Torcello
One of Torcello's main attractions is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639 with its 11th and 12th century Byzantine mosaics. They were completely, utterly, incredibly awe inspiring. Alas, no pictures for thee... none allowed. You'll just have to go see them for yourself.
Other attractions include the 11th century Church of Santa Fosca which is surrounded by a porticus in the form of a Greek Cross.
Torcello is also home to a "Devil's Bridge", known as the Ponticello del Diavolo (devil's little bridge).
Any statuary that is found on the island is dug up and simply moved to this one area creating a "graveyard of statues", so to speak.
Today there are only 7 permanent residents of this island.
